Don’t groan and turn over when your alarm clock goes off while it’s still dark and cold outside. Instead, turn your light on, hop out of bed, enjoy a cup of tea and head out for an early morning outdoor activity in Cape Town.
Yesterday morning I did just this and joined some friends surfing at Muizenburg.
Tino, my surf instructor in Nicaragua, would have been proud of me standing up on my board and riding some waves. We rented long board and wetsuits (both for R110) at the Roxy Surf School’s Surf Emporium at Muizenburg beach.
It was so refreshing, invigorating and a great start to our Sunday morning. We had great fun playing the waves and even tried all riding the same wave. After a while our arms were exhausted from paddling and the icy water got the better of us so we headed back to shore. After a hot shower, we headed to Knead for some hot beverages, delish breakfasts and decadent pastries.
I had an even earlier start this morning when I joined my brother, Mike, and friend, Alex, to do a sunrise hike up Lion’s Head in Cape Town.
It was well worth the 5.50am wake up. We met at the start of the hike and admired Cape Town’s city lights and the first signs of the sun rising. As we ascended Lion’s Head we were treated with spectacular views and colorful skies (as seen in my iPhone photographs below):
Our hike was a laugh a minute as Mike decided to pack an unusual snack pack for when we reached the summit. This included some feta cheese, a jar of peanut butter (with threes spoons). How random?! I then threw in some marshmallow Easter eggs and an energy bar. We decided that this snack pack was just not going to fill the gap so we treated ourselves to a post-hike breakfast at Arnold’s in Kloof Street. The Eggs Benedict was delicious and their smiling cappuccinos were a treat.
When last did you wake up early to Carpe Diem and do a fun outdoor activity? I highly recommend doing it. The fresh air, exercise and great company ensures that you want to dance along to the #Happy (Cape Town) music video for the rest of the day.
Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
